Treasure hunt in Kyoto...
This is my personal opinion, and so I would like you not take it personally.
Everyone says, Kyoto is beautiful. Partially yes, but overall the city its self no... It completely lost the balance of beauty in 80-90s after Japan's economy boost in 60-70s.
What we see in Kyoto is modern concrete buildings and houses, and sometimes Japanese traditional temples and old houses. I always wonder how amazingly beautiful in Kyoto if all the abandoned traditional houses were well preserved and blended into this modern life.
Long time ago, I read a book "Dogs and Demons" written by Alex Kerr who loved and lived in Kyoto. His observation was really interesting as I recall.
Anyway, for me, it is a treasure hunt every time I visit in Kyoto to find hidden beauty in the town.
